When homeowners select colors for their homes, they are looking for a hue that best captures their feelings. For many people, natural colors are particularly appealing in our busy lives. That wish for a natural color led Dutch Boy® Paints to select Deep Rooted (311-7DB), an earthy terracotta orange, as its 2027 Color of the Year.

“The 2027 Color of the Year gets us back to kindness, community and what’s real,” says Lisbeth Parada, Dutch Boy color marketing manager. “Our 2027 Color of the Year feels alive with possibility while being rooted in the familiar warmth of nature. Deep Rooted offers a color that feels rich, grounding, and deeply human. Its earthy orange tone creates a versatile foundation for spaces that celebrate individuality through bold contrasts and layered textures.”

Parada points out that Deep Rooted pairs nicely with soft neutrals, expressive blues, and calming greens, supporting a home that feels balanced and full of possibility.

She notes that the Dutch Boy Trendsight Team sees three driving influences this year: Kindness and Compassion, Power of Play, and Open Innovation.

For Kindness and Compassion, the Trendsight Team feels that years of digital overload, uncertainty and burnout have led to a renewed consumer focus on emotional resilience. Consumers are seeking gentle, meaningful experiences that foster balance, connection and inner strength with kindness and empathy at the center.

With regards to the Power of Play, Parada notes that joy is emerging as a powerful cultural force, with play, imagination and creativity encouraged at every age. For Open Innovation, consumers are embracing authenticity, empathy and community as core values, with simple shared experiences crating a stronger sense of belonging and mutual care.

To go along with Deep Rooted, Dutch Boy has curated three ideal palettes: Essence, Bliss and Clarity. Parada says that Deep Rooted works beautifully with each of the palettes’ two complementary hues.

“Our three color palettes are Essence, Bliss and Clarity,” Parada says. “We have seven colors for them, with Deep Rooted in each, either as the dominant color or as a highlight. Essence is rooted in authenticity. Consumers have no interest in curated perfection; they are looking for honesty. They want a lived-in home. Deep Rooted is paired with Western Orange and Antique White is this palette.

“For Bliss, we see consumers moving past minimalism fatigue. They want homes that feel optimistic and expressive, that bring joy. Deep Rooted pairs with Champagne Fizzle and Ribbon Blue here,” adds Parada.  “With Clarity, there is a sense of introspection. With the rise in digital noise, consumers are seeking spaces where they can unwind. Deep Rooted is paired here with Timbered Green and Felted Blue, and can be used for classic styles. It is sophisticated yet restful.”

Last year, Dutch Boy selected Melodious Ivory, a calm ivory, as its 2026 Color of the Year. Parada sees Deep Rooted as a nice fit with Melodious Ivory.

“We wanted to continue our Melodious Ivory further, and Deep Rooted moves us from the calm ivory to something bolder,” Parada says. “It’s still connected to the natural world. It’s an honest color.”
